Secondary Level Devlog 1.4.1

For our third milestone, I was tasked with experimenting with environmental effects, particles, light, and how they are incorporated into gameplay and level design. I originally wanted to do some evening/sunset lighting for the backyard scene, but the way I put fencing along the entire map meant shadows were being cast all the way across the yard. So, I landed on doing a moon-lit scene instead. I experimented with spot and area lighting by placing some simple lanterns in the yard, as well as spotlights off the house and garage. I also added an emissive glowing material to the windows to give them some realistic night-time lighting.

Based on feedback I received, I added a particle effect system that resembles fireflies. I originally wanted to utilize the flocking mechanic to do this, but it proved a bit too chaotic. With the particle system, I can use a larger sphere of fireflies to add to the environment, or I can use a smaller sphere to mark an objective or object of interest.

In addition to this, I began working on shaders for the grass I added to give it a windy, blowing effect. I also started on a particle  system for the player that will cause a poof of smoke to occur when the player lands after jumping or falling.
